      Winners announced for 2020 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards

      The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) formally announced the winners of the 2020 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards virtually this week with over 140 people in attendance each day. The PIDA Awards are an Australia and New Zealand program that is coordinated by the AIP, in conjunction with Packaging New Zealand. The PIDA Awards have been established to recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their field across Australia and New Zealand. The PIDA Awards are also the exclusive feeder program for Australian and New Zealand for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards run by the World Packaging Organisation.


      AIP appoints new President

      Packaging development specialist Jason Fields, group procurement manager at JBS and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Packaging, has been voted in as president of the AIP, taking over the reins from Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence. PKN spoke to both leaders on the eve of the announcement. Jason Fields became a member of AIP some 20 years ago and in 2011 was awarded a prestigious Fellowship of the Institute. He has worked in packaging development for over 25 years with SC Johnson Wax, Colgate, SunRice, Primo and currently, JBS. Fields joined JBS three years ago, and in the last two years has moved into a procurement category management role looking after functional packaging.


      Australia and New Zealand Packaging Designs shine in 2020 WorldStar Packaging Special Awards

      The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is pleased to announce that the 2x of the Australian and New Zealand companies that were shortlisted as finalists for 2020 WorldStar Packaging Special Awards have won their categories globally. The other two ANZ finalists were awarded Silver and Bronze awards which is an incredible feat for the ANZ region.

      When you think of outdoor furniture, roads, bollards, fences, patio decking and even footbridges you might not realise that a growing number of these items are made incorporating ‘soft plastics’ as a way to recycle flexible packaging and materials that have no home at this moment in the current kerbside recycling systems in Australia. Of the nearly 1.1 million tonnes of plastic packagingplaced onto the market in 2017–18, approximately 352 000 tonnes (33%) were soft plastics. However, only 29,000 tonnes or 8% of the soft plastic materials was recycled
